SCC Beach Volleyball: Mt. SAC Captures Team Crown, LBCC's Vaielua-Allen Grab Pairs Title
COMPLETE RESULTS FROM SCC BEACH PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIPS
While Mt. San Antonio College won its second South Coast Conference Beach Volleyball dual match championship in the last three seasons, Long Beach City's Enaya Vaielua and Tyreana Allen went down to the final points to grab the conference's pairs title. The Vikings duo outlasted the Mounties' Candace Ceballos and Madeline Castillo, 21-17, 18-21, 17-15, in the SCC Pairs Championships title match on Saturday at El Camino College.
ECC hosted the individual tourney that was played April 18-19 at the Warriors' sand courts.
In the title match, Ceballos-Castillo rallied to send it to a deciding third set and down 13-9 pushed the contest to 15 into extra points. Vaielua-Allen kept their poise though to win the pairs crown.
Mt. SAC (15-8 overall) won the team championship with a 7-1 South Coast record while Long Beach placed second at 5-3. The Vikings (12-9) prevented Mt. San Antonio from an undefeated conference run with a 3-2 win on April 11 at Mt. SAC. The Mounties scored a win over them in the first matchup, 3-2, at LBCC on March 28.
On April 4, Mt. San Antonio played the first night match in beach volleyball history and downed visiting and third place Cerritos, 3-2, that clinched the conference title. El Camino (11-11 overall) tied Cerritos (15-7) for third place, both with 4-4 records.
Vaielua, a women's volleyball All-American First Team setter-opposite in the fall, and Allen truly earned their pairs title as they rallied in three sets in the Round of 16 to down Mt. SAC's Eva Becerra/Mayah Tiscareno, 25-27, 21-14, 15-12, then beat Cerritos' Monserrat Rodriguez/Rosie Cazares-Gonzalez in a close quarterfinals match, 21-19, 21-17. They advanced to the championship final with another tight match, a 21-17, 21-19 triumph over El Camino's Erica Griffiths/Scheala Nielsen.
The third place final was won by El Camino's Tate Mercer/Aireon Scott over their Warriors teammates' Griffiths-Nielsen, 21-17, 21-18. The Falcons' Rodriguez-Gonzalez took fifth place over LBCC's Mikayla Curry/Kaylani Moncada, 23-21, 21-11.
The six pairs that played in the finals all advance to the SoCal Regional Pairs Championships, hosted by Mt. SAC, on May 2-3.
